Volunteers are the foundation of Ancoura’s activities. They are the lifeblood that keeps the organization going. Volunteers are needed for many different types of activities and varying time commitments, some occasional related to a particular project, some more long-term, some requiring special skills. The following volunteer list gives specific examples of our needs. This list is not comprehensive but hopefully it will assist potential volunteers to match their interests, time availability and skills with specific needs and activities.

Each Ancoura home has a team of resident visitors (about five per home) who form a group of friends for our residents. They often assist residents with daily tasks, such as shopping and cooking; go together for coffee and walks; visit museums and engage in other social activities and community events. The friendships that develop between residents and volunteers are a rich and vital aspect of Ancoura’s community. Generally, these visitors are asked to commit to at least one year as a visiting volunteer. However, we could use a few volunteer substitutes who could fill in periodically when regular resident visitors are away. Ancoura offers a basic training program for visiting volunteers.
Please note that all Ancoura volunteers are required to provide a police records check.
We can also use handy persons who could provide basic repairs and maintenance (the landlord does major maintenance and repairs).
Board of Directors
The board meets monthly at a time convenient to board directors. Board terms are two years open to renewal. Many directors also serve on a committee. We would benefit having on the board, or as a consultant: a lawyer, accountant, bookkeeper, real estate agent, fundraiser, someone with experience organizing volunteers.

Acts on behalf of the board during interim times between board meetings, dealing with strategic decisions, human resources, policies, and any ad hoc issues that are outside the mandate of other committees and best dealt with by the Executive Committee.
Advises and assists the board on financial matters including review of monthly and yearly financial statements, recommendation of the annual budget, and oversight of internal financial procedures as they arise.
Responsible for the communication tools that Ancoura uses to make ourselves known. These include our brochure, newsletter, website, annual report, Facebook and Twitter. Occasionally, the committee prepares PowerPoint presentations and videos.
Contacting various organizations to inform them about Ancoura and to solicit volunteers, furniture, donations and other forms of support. These organizations include faith communities, service clubs, colleges and universities, and agencies with a mandate in the area of mental health.
Plans, organizes and carries out activities needed for social events such as the Christmas party, summer barbecue and annual general meeting.
Provides broad oversight and leadership for Ancoura’s fundraising efforts, including donations from individuals and organizations, grants, and the annual fundraising dinner.
Willing to be Called when Specific Tasks Arise
We also need volunteers who are available for specific tasks, but do not wish to be part of a committee, e.g. helping arrange social activities, helping with moving.
