Resident Support Worker

Work Description

Part time (15- 20 hours per week),  Salary $28-30 per hour

The Resident Support Worker reports to the Resident Support Manager and provides supportive housing services to Ancoura’s residents as well as guidance and support to volunteers. The Resident Support Worker is expected to collaborate fully with the Manager and Office Administrator in the planning and implementation of these services.

Summary of Duties

The Resident Support Worker supports residents through regular in-person house meetings and one-on-one visits based on resident needs; mentors and supports Ancoura’s visiting and activity volunteers; participates in community and fundraising events. Performs other related duties.

1.     Supports residents through regular in-person house meetings and one-on-one visits based on resident needs:

• Reviews medication and assesses symptoms
• Supports residents in managing family dynamics, interpersonal relationships, conflict resolution
• Supports residents in planning and organizing activities such as those within the house, with volunteers, cross-house and agency wide
• Provides on-call support and crisis management as needed
• Attends case conferences and appointments with residents as needed
• Liaises with case workers and residents’ health care teams
• Advocates on behalf of residents, providing referrals, life-skills, guidance, training, and communications

2.     Mentors and supports Ancoura’s visiting and activity volunteers:

• Provides input to the design and organization of an educational program for volunteers and facilitates training as a resource
• Provides input to screening and assessing potential volunteers
• Matches visiting volunteers with homes and individuals
• Meets regularly with visiting volunteer teams to provide on-going coaching
• Meets individually with volunteers as needed
• Prepares and reviews monthly calendars of volunteer visits with residents.

3.     Participates in community and fundraising events:

• Promotes events to residents and volunteers and facilitates their attendance
• Suggests appropriate activities to engage residents and volunteers in events such as the annual BBQ and Holiday Season Party, movie nights, games nights and other activities.
• Attends events and facilitates the participation of residents and engages volunteers in activities
• Seeks out and supports residents and volunteers who may be willing to provide testimonials at fundraisers and other events
• Follows up and obtains feedback from residents and volunteers regarding events and provides recommendations for improvement.

4.     Performs other related duties, including but not limited to:

• Meets regularly with the Resident Support Manager and Office Administrator to discuss plans and assist with programs, projects and activities
• Maintains resident file notes and secures them according to office protocols for confidentiality
• Provides ideas, input, and insight on policy development and projects
• Provides ideas and input to various grant applications, such as scope, potential outputs and outcomes, measurement criteria, etc.
• Provides written and oral reports as required by the Resident Support Manager

Basic Requirements

To be considered for this job, applicants must be prepared to demonstrate the following credentials:

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Social Work, Psychology or Sociology), or the equivalent in experience and training
• At least one year of experience working with persons living with mental illness, preferably in a residential setting
• Access to a vehicle and the ability to drive to residents and meet them in their communities
• Active use of a cell phone
• Proficiency in technology such as Word, Excel, scheduling and case note software
• Flexibility to work evenings and weekends upon occasion, as required
• A minimum of 2 COVID 19 vaccinations

Pre-Hiring Requirements

Before being appointed to this position, candidates must provide the following:

• Academic credentials and satisfactory references Recent Vulnerable Sector Check (within two years, by the Ottawa Police Service)
• At least 2 references, preferably one personal and one professional
• Valid driver’s licence in the province of Ontario, with proof of $2 million in liability insurance
• Proof that the successful candidate has received both doses of a Health Canada approved COVID 19 vaccine at least 14 days before the first day of work, subject to Ancoura’s duty to accommodate under the Ontario Human Rights Code

Knowledge

• Social Determinants of Health and how these impact persons living with a severe and persistent mental illness
• Psychiatric disorders, symptoms and intervention methods
• Ottawa-based community and health resources in the region, including those related to mental health, housing, recreation, finances, transportation, vocation, and training
• Group Dynamics theory and practice
• Principles of Client-Centred practices
• Crisis and suicide intervention and prevention

Skills and Ability to

• Assess psychiatric symptoms and to intervene when appropriate
• Establish supportive and positive relationships with residents
• Apply group conflict resolution and cooperative living skills
• Support residents in developing and sustaining their social and emotional connections in their living and community environment.
