Ancoura

A Brief History

Our story began in February 2007 with an information session in a church basement led by L’Abri en Ville from Montreal. This meeting led to other meetings, on a monthly basis, and the growth of a community of people dedicated to providing affordable housing and a supportive community for people living with mental illness. In the Fall of 2007, we held a visioning retreat at which we articulated our mission, values and principles, and vision. In 2008, we chose our name, became incorporated, elected our first board of directors, opened an office, hired a coordinator and were registered as a charitable organization.

In September 2009 we set up our first home; renting a three-bedroom condominium on Jasmine Crescent from the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). In October, 2010 we opened our second residence in the west end of Ottawa and in November 2011 we opened our third residence in the same neighborhood. We have since opened four more residences, so that we now have seven homes in Ottawa. All of our residences are three-bedroom townhomes.
