Frequently Asked Questions
Ancoura is a not-for-profit corporation and registered charity that provides housing and support for adults living with mental illness in Ottawa.
Ancoura was founded in 2007 when a group of people started meeting with a view to using a supportive model developed by a Montreal group, L’Abri en Ville. The first Ancoura home was opened in 2009. There are currently seven Ancoura homes in Ottawa.
Each one of the Ancoura homes has a group of volunteers who visit regularly with the residents and participate with them in social activities. There is also a staff coordinator who provides one-on-one counselling and meets with each group of residents on a weekly basis to provide problem-solving assistance.
Ancoura residents live in rented, three-bedroom townhouses.
Residents are over 25 years of age and have a good understanding of their mental health issues. They are not abusing alcohol or drugs and they do not have a history of violence. Residents are connected to a health professional for on-going medical support and are willing to participate in social activities provided by Ancoura.
Ancoura accepts self-referrals, as well as referrals from families, hospitals or community organizations. The first step towards becoming a resident is to contact us at admin@ancoura.ca or 613-233-8130.
